Long-term stability of alpha particle damage in natural zircon

Abstract We report the first discovery of radiation damage haloes generated by alpha particles in zircon. Proterozoic zircon crystals from a potassium-rich leucogranite from the Adirondack Mountains, New York State, have interior regions that are generally low in actinide elements (UO 2  + ThO 2  ≤ 0.02 wt.%) but show a remarkable pattern of heterogeneous metamictisation. The degree of radiation damage in these regions is not uniformly low, as would be expected if it corresponded to the observed actinide distribution patterns and age of the crystals. Introduction: Radiotherapy of cancer requires both alpha- and beta-particle emitting radionuclides, as these radionuclide types are efficient at destroying different types of tumors. Both classes of radionuclides require a vehicle, such as an antibody or a polymer, to be delivered and retained within the tumor. Chemical Properties of Element 105 in Aqueous Solution: Halide Complex Formation and Anion Exchange into Triisoctyl Amine

Studies of the halide complexation of element 105 in aqueous solution were performed on 34-s 262Ha produced in the 249Bk(18-O,5n) reaction. The 262Ha was detected by measuring the fission and alpha activities associated with its decay and the alpha decays of its daughter, 4.3-s 258Lr. Time-correlated pairs of parent and daughter alpha particles provided a unique identification of the presence of 262Ha. About 1600 anion exchange separations of 262Ha from HCl and mixed HC1/HF solutions were performed on a one-minute time scale. Geochemical properties of rocks and soils in Gusev Crater, Mars: Results of the Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer from Cumberland Ridge to Home Plate

Geochemical diversity of rocks and soils has been discovered by the Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer (APXS) during Spirit’s journey over Husband Hill and down into the Inner Basin from sol 470 to 1368. The APXS continues to operate nominally with no changes in calibration or spectral degradation over the course of the mission. Germanium has been added to the Spirit APXS data set with the confirmation that it occurs at elevated levels in many rocks and soils around Home Plate. Twelve new rock classes and two new soil classes have been identified at the Spirit landing site since sol 470 on the basis of the diversity in APXS geochemistry. Complete sets of mineral abundances for relatively unaltered volcanic or volcaniclastic rocks in Gusev Crater have been determined by modeling Mössbauer subspectral areas as mineral weight percentages, and combining those percentages with the proportions of iron-free minerals not detected by Mössbauer (normative plagioclase, apatite, and chromite, as calculated from Alpha Particle X-Ray Spectrometer (APXS) chemical analyses). High accuracy [sup 18]O(p,α)[sup 15]N reaction rate in the 8⋅10[sup 6]–5⋅10[sup 9] K temperature range

The 18O(p,α)15N reaction is of great importance in several astrophysical scenarios, as it influences the production of key isotopes such as 19F, 18O and 15N. In this work, a high accuracy 18O(p,α)15N reaction rate is proposed, based on the simultaneous fit of direct measurements and of the results of a new Trojan Horse experiment. In particular, we have focused on the study of the broad 660 keV 1/2+ resonance. Since Γ∼100–300 keV, it strongly influences the nearly‐zero‐energy region of the cross section by means of the low‐energy tail of the resonant contribution and dominates the cross section at higher energies. The scattering of 38 MeV α-particles by C, N, 0, F and Kr nuclei

This paper describes observations by a photographic method on the angular distributions of 38 MeV α-particles scattered by light nuclei. Elastically and inelastically scattered particles were distinguished by their range in nuclear emulsion. The observed distributions are compared with the general predictions of the nuclear optical model, of direct interaction theories,and of the inelastic diffraction theory of Blair. In teraction radii are deduced from the angular distributions.
